BETTY:
With your mad success on Friends and just getting hitched
to Brad Pitt, you must have
an insane schedule. With all of those crazy commitments,
why this movie? What drew you into your role in Rock Star?
JENNIFER: It
fit into the slot really nicely and it also allowed for
some free time, which I always need before going back to
work on Friends. And it was Mark Wahlberg - and that really
excited me. Plus it was a fun, rock & roll, popcorn, junk
food kinda movie. And I was into it. I thought it was also
a touching love story.
BETTY:
In one scene in which you and Mark's character have to do
some steamy dancing at a nightclub with SEVERAL partners,
I heard a bit of tequila went a long way!
JENNIFER: [Laughs]
That was my bad acting, unfortunately. There wasn't a lot
of tequila… because it's all choreographed and then you
have to make it look real and comfortable… and I was so
uncomfortable and out of my body… it was pretty intense
for me.
BETTY:
Okay, I just gotta ask this… How did your hubby, Brad Pitt
react when he saw you kissing a girl in that scene?
JENNIFER:
He was fine. [Laughs] I don't think that bothered
him at all.

BETTY:
Okay, I'll buy that.... but didn't he squeeze your hand
a bit harder when the love scenes popped up on screen with
you and Mark? How'd he handle those?
JENNIFER: Yeah
he's seen it. But you just know what it is. It's so technical
- and there's nothing. It just doesn't mean anything. You
have so many people around you and it's literally bit by
bit.
BETTY: What about you? Are you jealous
when you see Brad with a woman in a film?
JENNIFER: No. It's just not real. It's a movie.
|
|
BETTY:
Is it true that he was slated to actually play the part
instead of Mark Wahlberg?
JENNIFER: Yeah. About a year before it came around the
second time, he and the writer, John Stockwell, were talking
about it with Warner Bros. and then I don't know what happened.
Eventually it came back (it was called Metal God at the
time) and they beefed up my character's role.
BETTY:
What about working with Brad? Would you like that?
JENNIFER: I'd love to do that. I truly would. And when
it's right it will be. But can you imagine the microscope
we'd be under for that one? We'll just stay married for
a while first.
BETTY:
This movie covers a lot of metal music that was big in the
'80s. I'm curious to know, what type of music did you listen
to back then?
JENNIFER: I'd listen to everybody. Depeche Mode and
The Go-Go's… I think we even tried to form a girl band at
one point - I was like 13 or 14 at the time.
BETTY: You were in a girl band?
JENNIFER: No. We tried to do it, but there was no musical
talent - at all.
BETTY: Can you sing?
JENNIFER: No!
BETTY: Not even Karaoke?
JENNIFER: No! It's humiliating. I have stage fright
oddly enough. Unless it's written for me and I know I can
do it, I'd just be petrified on stage.
|
|
BETTY:
Did you ever have any crushes on the singers from that era?
JENNIFER: Sure I did. There was my Aerosmith obsession…I
loved Duran Duran….
BETTY: Were you ever a George Michael
fan?
JENNIFER: No, I never liked Wham! I was an Aerosmith
fan. You know, Chicago and the Doobie Brothers.
BETTY: What about now? Who do you listen to these days?
JENNIFER: Well all those bands really transcend - but
now Radiohead is a big favorite. And Jill Scott and Missy
Elliot I love. I'm also into Cold Play and Moby.

BETTY: Can you identify with the
"cult of celebrity" aspect of this movie?
How fame hits this young man so quickly and the media spotlight
he's thrown into?
JENNIFER: Yeah, definitely. Especially the speedy rise
to fame, I can totally relate to it in terms of Friends.
It got big so fast - and not knowing what's going on and
what it all means…why are people so nice to me now…and why
am I getting free clothes when I can afford to buy them?…
all those weird things that happen to celebrities that just
make you question it.
BETTY: Do you question it?
JENNIFER: Of course I question it. How can you not?
It's just a bizarre thing that happens.
BETTY:
Do you think you have a good relationship with the press?
Unfortunately, there's always things being written about
you and things taken out of context…
JENNIFER: No. I've given up on it all. I truly have.
There's a point where you say, "It doesn't matter what I
say… it doesn't matter what I really feel"… There will always
be someone who misrepresents you or creates something that's
not even there.

BETTY:
There's a scene in the movie where you and Mark walk around
in this rock star's huge mansion… and you're both in awe.
Didn't you and Brad just buy a large place like the one
depicted in the movie?
JENNIFER: Oh God, not at all. That's a mansion. I have
a beautiful, humble little home. Everything's been exaggerated…the
price of it, the size of it.
BETTY: Are you going to decorate
it yourself?
JENNIFER: Oh yeah. We both love to do that. But we'll
stick with the integrity of the house. It's beautiful.

BETTY:
I know this sounds shallow as hell, but there's been so much
written about your ever-changing hairstyles… and I must say,
your hair is truly amazing. Can you give us any helpful hints
on how you keep it looking so damn good?
JENNIFER: Sure. I use Mane and Tail Shampoo and Conditioner
that I get from an equestrian store. It's actually horse shampoo.
See how long and gorgeously thick their tails are? That's
what I use.
BETTY: Did you have big hair in the
'80s?
JENNIFER: I had very big hair. I had bangs that started
way back on my head - then I layered it. I colored it too.
It was bad hair.
BETTY: A lot of people have commented
on how wonderful you are to work with. They've also said that
you're really down to earth. Have you ever been tempted to
get caught up in the…
JENNIFER: IN THE BITCH MODE? THE DIVA WORLD?
BETTY: Sure, for lack of better words…
JENNIFER: No way. I feel there is no excuse for any human
being in the world (celebrity or not) to behave inappropriately
with another human being. I just think it's disgusting when
I see it.
BETTY: Amen sister! Well, I'm glad to see that with all
that you've accomplished, you're still among the sane. Congrats
again, Jennifer, and I wish you continued success.
JENNIFER: Why thank you very much! |
