BBB:
In Never Been Kissed, your character returns to high school and encounters
some uncomfortable moments. And she definitely doesn't look like the
Drew we know. Was that difficult to pull off?
Drew:
When I was growing up and watching movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont
High and those John Hughes movies, they really tapped into this pain
that you feel growing up. Never Been Kissed really isn't a teen movie.
It takes place in high school, but that's a perfect venue for self-examination.
It's so raw. I love that the movie capitalizes on the awkwardness of
life and the pain that you feel. And also that at the end of the day,
you want to have a good laugh and find the humor in it. It's nice to
have a lot of bad things happen and then have a happy ending, you know?
I like that. I'm still a romantic that way.
BBB:
Are you anything like Josie "Grossie" Gellar?
Drew:
I'm a lot like Josie. I must look like a clown sometimes. I met Clint
Eastwood a few months ago and I was like, "HI! I - I LOVE YOUUUU!" Like
I was so lame! And he was so cool. I walked away from that thinking
that he thought I was an idiot, ya know? But he didn't let me feel that
way, I made myself feel that way. But I had to tell him. I didn't want
to be on my deathbed thinking, "Damn it - why didn't I let that person
know how much I loved them?"
Creatively, I got so into Josie Grossie! I just loved her. I loved being
her. I loved all the awkwardness of my body, the pimples, the pools
of grease and my unruly eyebrows. And that great enthusiasm that you
never want to see harbored in anyone. Whether it's at school or because
of the way they look. They're so beautiful. I don't want people to become
self-conscious or guarded. I want them to put their hearts on the line.
BBB:
Do you remember the first time you were really kissed? And I don't mean
a simple peck. I'm talkin' rocket-sized fireworks!
Drew:
I kissed this one gentleman on a balcony - and there was ceramic tile
everywhere. I remember feeling this cool air from the ceramic tile.
And I was kissing him thinking that I couldn't wait until we have this
beautiful perfect rhythm together. That was nice.
BBB:
Yummy. How old were you when that happened?
Drew:
I was 16.
BBB:
You were hanging with Ed Norton at the Oscars. Now tells us, is something
up between you two?
Drew:
Oh no...we've been best friends since the Woody Allen movie [Everyone
Says I Love You].
BBB:
But what about that kiss you planted on Molly Shannon when you hosted
Saturday Night Live? Was that your idea?
Drew:
(laughs) She is such a good kisser!
BBB:
No tongue slippage right?
Drew:
No, but it was open mouth! Open mouth but no tongue. She is just
so awesome. It was just great because it was just in the heat of the
moment and we just went for it...It was so funny. She's my good friend
and it was so much fun working with her [in the movie also]. She's so
talented - it's unbelievable.
BBB:
Do you have any advice for Fashion Trippers who may be a little like
Josie Grossie?
Drew:
Educate yourself and trust your instincts. Remember that everything
is possible and try to be open to it all. Then you find what works for
you individually. Also being a great listener is a great philosophy.
BBB:
Well thank you Drew for taking the time to chat with me.
Drew:
You are so welcome BeatBoxBetty!
